The ukulele is the least intimidating instrument we teach, and that is its entire advantage. Soft nylon strings that do not hurt small fingers, four strings instead of six, and chord shapes simple enough that a genuine song is playable in the first lesson rather than the first month.

The best first instrument for a young child
For a four to seven year old who wants to play something with strings, ukulele beats guitar comfortably. The instrument is sized for them, the strings are gentle, and the two-finger chord shapes mean they hear real music immediately. Many of our students start on ukulele and move to guitar at nine or ten with the fretting hand, rhythm and chord vocabulary already in place.
Adult beginners, and why so many start here
A large share of our ukulele students are adults, and most of them chose it because it seemed achievable. They were right. It is small enough to keep on a couch, quiet enough not to disturb anyone, and it produces a satisfying result faster than any other stringed instrument. Several of our adult students arrived intending to learn one song for a wedding and stayed for years.
Which size to buy
Soprano is the classic small one and the right size for young children. Concert is slightly larger with more room between frets, which most adults find more comfortable. Tenor is larger again with a fuller sound. Any of the three is a fine start; avoid the very cheapest instruments, which often cannot be tuned accurately and make a beginner think they are the problem.
Beyond three chords
The ukulele has a genuine repertoire and a real technical ceiling — fingerstyle arrangements, chord melody, Hawaiian traditional playing. Students who want to go past strumming and singing have plenty of room, and our instructors teach into it.

A dedicated room with a tuned acoustic piano, a full kit and amps — the right setting for recital prep and for students without gear at home.

Guitar
Acoustic and electric. Chords and songs from week one, with theory folded in as it becomes useful rather than as a prerequisite.
Piano & Keys
The clearest map of how music is built. Classical, pop and contemporary, with reading and ear training taught side by side.
Drums & Percussion
Groove, independence and reading. We can start on a practice pad or an electronic kit if a full setup isn't realistic at home yet.
Violin & Strings
Posture and tone first. Suzuki-friendly, school-orchestra aligned, and open to fiddle and film-score repertoire when that's the motivation.
Voice
Breath support, pitch, range and stamina — plus the practical nerve it takes to sing in front of an audition panel or a room.
Bass
Time, tone and the pocket. The most employable instrument in any band and the fastest route into playing with other people.
Band & Ensemble
Small-group play-alongs for students already taking lessons. Counting someone else in is a different skill from playing alone.

About ukulele lessons.
How quickly can someone play a song?
Most students play something recognisable in the first lesson. Two chords is enough for a real song, and two chords is achievable in twenty minutes.
Is ukulele a good gateway to guitar?
Yes. The top four strings of a guitar are tuned to the same intervals as a ukulele, so chord shapes transfer directly. It is one of the best on-ramps there is.
What should I spend on a first ukulele?
Enough to get one that holds tune — usually the fifty to a hundred dollar range for a beginner instrument. Below that, tuning stability becomes genuinely frustrating.
